We’ve always known that Dover’s stunning coastline and rich history make it an incredibly special destination, offering unforgettable experiences to visitors from around the world. And now, we have even more reason to shout about it!

Travel guide experts Lonely Planet recently ranked Kent, including Dover, at number four on its prestigious list of the world’s best regions to visit – ‘Best in Travel 2022.’ This list highlights the top 10 must-visit regions for the ultimate travel experience, and Dover’s remarkable historical significance played a key role in this recognition.

From the towering majesty of Dover Castle, one of the most iconic fortresses in Britain, to the fascinating discovery of the Bronze Age boat, the oldest known seagoing vessel or follow the settlers history and try the River Dour Trail, a new walking trail (set up by the White Cliffs Countryside Project) - Dover is a treasure trove of historical gems. Visitors can also explore the Roman Painted House, often referred to as the finest example of Roman domestic architecture in Britain, and the artillery forts that line our coastline, once defending the nation from invaders.

Lonely Planet praised the area for its rich blend of history and culture, with Dover Castle hailed as a "historic highlight" and the Strait of Dover being recognised for its natural beauty and plans to secure it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Additionally, our town is known for its commitment to sustainable tourism, with efforts to regenerate historic Dover and foster a vibrant cultural scene, including unique events throughout the year.

So, whether you’re drawn by the incredible history, the dramatic chalk cliffs, or the thriving local culture, now is the time to experience everything Dover has to offer – an internationally acclaimed destination waiting for you to explore.

DOVER WINTER LIGHT UP NEW DATE

Dover Town Council and Future Foundry are sad to announce that Dover’s Winter Light Up will be postponed due to Storm Darragh forecast to reach Dover this weekend. All festivities, activities and the lantern procession which were to be taking place on Saturday 7th of December are on hold until February 8th 2025.

We have been very lucky over the past 4 years to have had perfect conditions for Dover’s Winter Light Up. However with 60mph gusts predicted on Saturday, it will not be possible to run the event safely.

The great news is that Dover’s Winter Light Up has been rescheduled for Saturday the 8th of February. It will be a festival of light when we need it most - at the end of winter just before the first signs of spring. We will be offering all the enchanting activities we had planned for this weekend, with circus performances, cabaret, music, rides, markets, workshops and Future Foundry’s magical lantern procession - all just in time for the start of spring.

In the meantime stay safe during Storm Darragh and we wish you a wonderful festive, winter season.
